Around 1948 I was about 3 years old and hand begun to wander further and further away from our home on Braddock Road in rural Fairfax County in Northern Virginia, where our neighbors had dairy farms from Centreville to Fairfax along a dusty gravel road through what was then called "Blevins Town", because most of our families were relatives (either by blood or marriage). My Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles & a multitude of Cousins all lived along a 2 mile stretch of "Braddock" which was mostly wilderness where Bobcats screamed and whippoorwills sang their sad lament throughout the night. Shallow Civil War graves carpeted the "Woods" across from and in back of 'Our House' where ground fog drifted like 'Lost Souls' of dead Confederate and Union soldiers aimlessly traversed the Low Ground in the cool of the Evening? My mother O'Ceil was about 22 years old and was overwhelmed with three siblings and didn't seem to mind when I wandered off into the woods (I was just a Baby myself) seems i was born with a very active curiosity and a rough sense of direction? I crawled under the rust barbed wire fence, through a quarter acre thicket of Black Berry bushes (which also happened to be the domicile of the "Copperhead" snake, which were cousins of the "Rattle Snake" but only hissed if you came to close? My older brother Robert and his "Pals" built a rough fort of barbed wire, dead brush and tree limbs inside of a 1/4 acre of White Pine trees that had a floor of 'Broom Sage' that swayed in the ever present breeze whispering through the sweet pine needles in a robust 'Hillbilly' incense :) I'd lay there with the sun warm on my face, eyes partially closed, watching the voluminous towering cathedral like clouds that took the most amazing life like shapes, people, animals, structures? It was the most peaceful place that I had ever experienced :) The boughs of the pine trees seemed to whisper to me? Not far from my 'Brush Sanctuary' was a very tall Hickory tree, where my brother and his Pal's built an extremely menacing and wobbly platform with no guard rail at all, nailed to a couple limbs! They had nailed boards for rungs a couple feet apart up the trunk of the Hickory up to the platform which was about 20 feet off of the ground (just high enough to break every bone in my body if I fell! Somehow I felt right at ease as if somebody that I could not see but felt Him lifting me up and steadying my ascent?? All through that Summer He was there! I knew not His name or what He did for a living BUT all I knew was that He was my friend, Who lived at the very top of that old Hickory tree :) He showed me strange places, faces & Heavenly People in those different cloud formations! He "Babysit" me in that little sanctuary in the woods until I got old enough to go to school and started trying to make friends and after a couple years I had completely forgotten Him. It was not until I was gone to Vietnam some 15 years later and had been "Blown Up" and was reintroduced to my 'Old Friend' in His "Sanctuary" and His name is Jesus :)
